About us

We are schmaz

Allow us to introduce ourselves; «schmaz» stands for «schwuler männerchor zürich», that is to say, «gay men's choir zürich».

We consist of some 45 gay singers under our musical director and conductor, Ernst Buscagne. We are proud of the high musical standards for which the «schmaz» is known and has stood for since its beginnings in 1990. Over the past 25 years we have amused,  surprised, moved, irritated and delighted our audiences and public, not least as a messenger for gay causes and concerns. In venues ranging from small local theatres to city concert halls and music festivals, our concerts throughout Switzerland and beyond vary from own 'a capella' and combo accompaniment productions to large co-productions with other choirs, orchestras and soloists.

We take pride  in our diverse musical repertoire, reciting compositions from the Medieval through to the Contemporary Classic, folk-song, the American Songbook as well as 80's & 90's hits.

Our musical director

The outstanding level of musicianship is not only due to our singers commitment and rehearsal discipline, but also thanks to the unrelenting professional support and leadership of our musical director Ernst Buscagne, himself a professional Baritone soloist and experienced choral conductor. He follows in the footsteps of Karl Scheuber, the choir's founder and long term conductor.

We invite you to join us at our concert venues as advertised or why not come along to one of our rehearsals on Monday evenings and see for yourselves if joining our song gives you the same enjoyment in making music with others. Don't hesitate to contact us.
